Miss Viola on eggs

Stay tuned Lucky Cluckers as Miss Viola is now setting on three Silkie eggs that came to us straight from North Carolina! Yes, my home state. We can thank Liz Fox for her generosity in flying back east to visit family and pick up some pure bred Silkie eggs from a competent breeder. By the middle of the month we should have new babies! Becca, start coming up with some names.

Chicken races and fun with eggs headlined the 2009 Lucky Cluck Chicken Party. Charlie, Kristen and Debra all had their first taste of a Chicken Party. And this time we had the event outside where we could fully enjoy our two-legged friends. Lets take a look: The race is about to start–Frankie and Chi Chi are ready to rumble and their handlers can hardly hold them back!

Frankie takes the early lead!

Frankie is off to an early lead and she never looked back—our first chicken race winner.

The fun with eggs started with an egg relay. The tricky part was the spoon to spoon transfer of our precious huevos.

Three legs, two eggs, and one great race. We all know everything is more fun with eggs, and this race is no exception.

egg-hop1

Showing wild hops, the third egg race had its ups and downs.  A lot of eggs ended up on the ground in this contest but only one contestant got yolked.egg-transfer1

Showing incredible teamwork and spooning skills, Lick and Rinda delicately transfer their fragile cargo.

The entertaining egg-toss proved why it is a perenial favorite of athletes everywhere.

I have never had so much fun with eggs!!!

The Big Show

We all knew that Ms. Viola was special. But we didn’t realize just how unique she really is. Count ‘em….one, two, three, four, five, six toes! Ok, no chicken is supposed to have six toes, but Ms. Vi does. And no, this doesn’t conform to the “Standard of Perfection,” but so what! Her extra fluffy butt, good color and fine overall condition scored Ms. Vi a second place ribbon at the First Annual Coastal Cluckers Chicken Show.

The event was a big success, bringing in almost 80 chicken fanciers, or would-be chicken fanciers. This included a wide mix of ages and levels of chicken awareness. We had a world class judge, Beau, a poultry science major at OSU. This guy really knows his way around a chicken. He patiently judged each chicken for the crowd, providing a running commentary on each bird as he went.buff butt.jpg

Here’s how the other Lucky Cluckers did:

Talla: Honorable Mention

Bisquit: Honorable Mention

Matilda: Second Place clean-legged bantam

Buff: Second in Show and winner of a bright red trophy

Penny: First Place clean-legged bantam

Jimmy: Best in Show! and a big, gold-leafed trophy

The Judging was followed a showmanship demo by Sara Fox and a game of Chicken Jeopardy! A whole bunch of people got in on the game and all increased their level of general chicken knowledge and appreciation. And that is what the event was all about!  Thanks to Lincoln County 4-H, Muddy Paw Farm, Lucky Cluck Farms and Chicks for Hens for sponsoring the event.the cluckers 028.jpgthe cluckers 031.jpg
