Our most broody of hens, Miss Viola, a blue Silkie is finally getting a chance to set on eggs.  I was warned by books and videos that Silkie’s are notoriously broody chickens and make excellent mothers but I had no idea how true this was of the breed.  At only five months old Miss Viola, owned by Becca who loves fluffy chicken butts, turned broody for the first time.  She turned one year old in March and has been broody for four of those 12 months.  That’s a lot of settin’!  So now she sets on six eggs due to hatch around May 14.  The pullets, if there are any, will go to a guy in our town who needs some broody hens to set on chickens that he plans to raise for meat.  The cockerels, let’s hope there are none, will end up on Doug’s dinner plate.
